Episode 2 - Clothes Maketh the Man

EPISODE TWO:

CLOTHES MAKETH THE MAN

In the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy one October evening in 1863, The Great Eastern ran furiously down Victoria Parade in close pursuit by a policeman. Tackled, then handcuffed and dragged towards the nearby lockup, the prisoner finally confessed ‘I may as well tell you I am a man.’

This episode explores the power of clothing to make and break gender identity in the colonial world. Dead & Buried explores known early cases of men and women who cross-dressed, a practice more widespread than might first be assumed.

This episode contains coarse language and sexual references.
